Since I was younger Lauren Child has always captivated me with her patterns and unique style. Before even beginning to draw I saw her as an inspiration and therefore now looking at creating a children’s book I wanted to research into her books and art to experiment and see how she can influence my own illustrations. But who is Lauren Child?
Lauren Child is an English author and illustrator and is best know for her work of Charlie and Lola as seen below. CHarlie and Lola was a hit and her first book “ I will never not ever eat a tomato” was published and launched in 2000. After the success of her books Child’s series was made into a 78 part series created for the BBC. In this series Child’s style was kept and really captured her traditional spin of digital collage.
Since then Lauren Child has won many awards including BAFTAs and also became the new children’s Laureate in 2017. But it is not only her success that i find inspiring but her overall style within how she produces her books.
Below is a great example of a double page spread. I felt this was a great of an effective children’s books, as the composition interesting and draws the child in. I also love how the birds have all varied within their use of texture and pattern and also the combination of type within the bird.
Another thing i love regarding Lauren Child’s work is her use of text, as it often is odd or off centred and gives rthe effect of letter stamping. I feel this is so effective as it adds that fun element that is still readable for the child. The image below is a great example of the type face that she loves to play around with.
Below is also a great example of Lauren Child’s work and shows how she used her unique style within an environment scene. I personally feel this is where her unique style really stands out, with her combination of collage and black line work. This is personally one of my favourite illustrati9ons of hers as o .ove hows she creates the tress full of natural pattern and texture.
